When you think of online backup services, you probably think of Carbonite, SugarSync, and other “big names” in the market. There are, of course, plenty of lesser-known services that are working hard to provide backup services that are equal to those of the leaders. Of course, before choosing any backup provider, you want to do a bit of research to make sure it isn’t one of the “here today, gone tomorrow” companies.
About MiMedia
It doesn’t take long to dig around and find some of the lesser-known providers that are still holding their own against the leaders. One service, in particular, is called MiMedia. This backup service has been in operation for about a year. One of their key features is the ability for users to have on-demand access to all of their files.
This on-demand access allows you to watch your videos, look through your pictures, peruse your documents, and listen to your favorite songs all from one location – MiMedia’s web interface. As far as traditional backup services, MiMedia provides automatic backups and syncing of changed files.
For your initial upload, you can use their Shuttle Drive service. This service involves MiMedia sending you a Shuttle Drive that you connect to your computer. Your files are backed up to the drive, you send it back to MiMedia, and they upload your data to the cloud. This is a timesaving service for users that have a large amount of data to store.
Current Storage and Pricing
MiMedia offers a 7GB free plan, a 250GB plan for $9.99/month or $99/year, and even 500GB and 1TB plans, if needed. You can try the paid plan for 30 days and you can backup as many devices as you want. The service is a bit limited because there is no Mac support yet, but they promise that it is in the works.
Unique Referral Plan
Like other backup providers, MiMedia wants you to refer their service to others. They offer a unique twist to the standard “free space for referrals” plan of many backup services. With MiMedia, free users get 1GB of space for every five referrals that sign up for any plan – even the free plan. Paid users get a $25 MiMedia service credit for every five referrals. So, five referrals will pay for about two months of the 250GB plan. All users get a $25 American Express gift card for each paid referral.
MiMedia seems to be one service that deserves to be watched. After a year in the business, they are still going strong and making fair offers to keep new customers coming in. Once they add other OS support and maybe throw in a few mobile apps, they will definitely have their place in the online backup provider market.

Notify me when there is Mac support – Thanks.
I tried MiMedia about 6 months ago but the drive they sent me did not work so I just canned them again, their plans are attractive when it comes to size, their software I am not really impressed with.

We certainly appreciate your giving MiMedia a try. Like any new service, 6 months at MiMedia is a very long time. We’d certainly like you to give us another look.

I am a Canadian resident and I am not happy that I cannot upgrade my account. I have spent the entire month uploading my information and have made many suggestions to friends about signing up-promoting mimedia continually. I have just found out that I cannot upgrade. I did not know this when I signed up!! Or I would not have signed up at all. I spent time on the so called “live help” where I couldn’t get a response when I asked to speak with a supervisor== the live help rep, asked me all the same questions that I supplied at the beginning of the conversation. I am not a happy person right now and will be contacting the CNET website to let them know not to send their customers to mimedia because of the lack of help- and for the lack of acceptance for a Canadian resident.
