With cloud computing encompassing so many aspects of our lives, from emails to backing up computers, and with ereaders being so popular, it seems natural that the two would finally meet. That’s right, Amazon is scheduled to release its new Kindle Fire and rumor has it that it will be connected to their Amazon Cloud Drive.
Amazon’s Cloud Drive was released earlier this year. In short, the service provides you with 5GB of free space for storing music, videos, documents, and other data. Cloud Drive is following in the footsteps of other online backup services and it seems to be making a decent go at it. With a potential link to the new Kindle, though, it could feasibly spread like wild fire.
The Kindle is Amazon’s digital ereader. This nifty contraption provides users with a paper-like digital rendition of their favorite books. Now, the Kindle Fire is not the traditional e-ink device. Amazon is no fool and they knew they needed to get in on the tablet market to try and give Apple a run for their money.
Enter the Amazon Kindle Fire
The Kindle Fire is Amazon’s version of the tablet. This device will have a custom version of Android and will not have the traditional Kindle e-ink technology. However, it has the Kindle name and Amazon standing behind it, so it is bound to be good.
The interesting part about the Kindle Fire is that there is rumored to be code that seems to point to the Cloud Drive. The code seems to have something to do with whether or not a particular Kindle can backup to the company’s servers – in other words, the code checks to see if your Kindle is compatible with backing up to the Cloud Drive.
Keeping in mind that Kindle’s have always been able to upload files to the Cloud Drive, this is an interesting piece of code (for all of you “techies”, the code is “Pdocs_Archival_Support”). It indicates the possible ability of the Kindle Fire being able to download from the Cloud Drive.
Wait and See
It remains to be seen whether or not the Kindle Fire will be linked to the Cloud Drive. It will be interesting to watch this new tablet on the market, too. With so many Kindle fans in the world, it is easy to imagine this tablet and the Cloud Drive gaining some impressive numbers.
Amazon’s Kindle is already a market leader so imagine how well it will do if the latest version is going to be a tablet and an ereader – with cloud backup. It should continue to dominate.
