Do a search on the Internet for “free unlimited online backup,” and you’ll come up with lots of options for so-called “free” online backup services. However, upon closer inspection, these “unlimited” services aren’t really free. So, do they really exist?
Probably not. It’s hard to tell based upon current search results, but it appears that these options may have been free at one point on at least a trial period basis for many of these companies. One service, for example, boasted that it had unlimited online backups for free on its search results listing; however, clicking through to the link itself opened a page where free backup was listed as 2 GB. Either the company never offered free unlimited online backup to begin with, and only put that phrasing in its search listing to entice visitors to click through, or it offered it in some capacity (perhaps on a trial basis), but didn’t continue with it and the listing is just outdated.
If “no cost” unlimited online backup services don’t exist(or are at least very hard to find), what is out there? There are “no extra cost” options that give you a lot of storage, if not unlimited online backup:
* Online backup services that offer significant storage for free
For many home and business computer users, it’s not that they need free *unlimited* online backup storage, but just a lot of it. There are free ackup and storage options available that are truly free, and some give you a significant amount of space. One well-known provider, for example, offers 25 GB of storage that truly is absolutely free, although it doesn’t have an automatic backup capability.
* Your ISP
ISPs are getting in on the backup game by offering current subscribers not free unlimited online backup space, but a small amount of free backup space (again, usually about 2 GB). The advantages to this are that you don’t have to do anything special to get it; there’s no signing up for an extra account, no providing extra passwords, no registering anywhere else, etc. There are drawbacks to this, too, in that you have to stay subscribed to your ISP in order to continue to access your data. Switch ISPs, and you lose access to your data; check terms of service carefully to determine what happens to your data if you decide to leave your ISP.
* Free online backup services
There are several well-known online backup service providers that offer free accounts with small amounts of backup storage, again, usually 1 to 2 GB. These companies are reputable and well-known, and your data is truly safe with them. Unlike signing up for backup service through your ISP, you do have to register for these services, but because they’re not tied to an ISP subscription and are truly independent services, you won’t risk losing your data as you might if you decide to switch ISPs.
