Like any fast-growing industry, online backup services come and go. When one company breaks into the market, another company may go under. Reputable services, such as Carbonite and Mozy, are in it for the long haul, while other services are “newbies”, getting their feet wet and seeing how the business goes.
A new cloud storage service out of West Virginia is ready to take on new customers. Although they look promising, only time will tell how their service fares the competitive industry of online backup services.
Small Steps into Online Backup
Mountain Fog is a cloud computing company in West Virginia that was founded just this year. This “baby” company is ready to take its first steps into online backup service by launching the service, BlueCloud. This appears to be your standard backup and storage service. According to their website, BlueCloud promises to provide “secure, dynamic, and affordable data storage for home users and businesses of all sizes.”
Pricing, Storage and a Special Feature
As far as pricing and storage size, BlueCloud is currently running a special where users get 5GB of storage free for three months. After that, the price is $7.50/month. For an additional $1.50/month, users can add another GB of space. The storage is unlimited because as long as a customer is willing to pay $1.50 per GB/per month beyond the initial 5GBs, they can buy as much storage as they want. BlueCloud has a web interface for online access to stored files and they also provide physical access to date at their b&m location in Fairmont.
One unique feature of BlueCloud is their Disk2Cloud service. With this option, Blue Cloud will send you a USB flash drive, free of charge. You load the data you want them to store and send it back, shipping pre-paid by BlueCloud. For $0.25 per GB of data, Blue Cloud will load your files to your account. You can always choose to upload your own files through their web interface, but the Disk2Cloud option adds a touch of clever customer service to BlueCloud’s overall plan.
Mobile Services Offered and In the Works
Mountain Fog also offers an Android app for backing up SMS messages on your mobile phone. An app for the BlueCloud backup service is in the works. Mountain Fog and BlueCloud are likely to appeal to local customers that want to take advantage of physical access to stored data. However, with the right marketing, BlueCloud can entice customers all over the country with their personal uploading service. It will be interesting to see how this new cloud computing company holds up against the “big names” in online backup service.
