Characteristics Of Good Online Storage Solutions

Backups have always been necessary, but now, they’re easy, too. With most online storage solutions, you can have your backups done for you automatically, so that if you should need to retrieve your data in the event of a crash, you can. No more panicking that you haven’t updated your backups for two months; just replace your hard drive or other inoperable hardware, reinstall your program software, go to your online backup account, and restore your files with a single click. What are the characteristics of good online storage solutions?

They are free or very inexpensive

It’s always been possible to buy an external hard drive for automatic backup, but these things are pricey — and they can crash, too. Even if you’ve got an external hard drive for automatic backup, you’re not entirely protected because if that hard drive should crash, you’re out of luck.

Good online storage companies don’t have either problem. If you have just a little data to store, you can usually get a free account (most free accounts store between 1 and 2 GB of data and offer all of the same features as their full accounts with much more storage). Even if you’ve got a lot more data to store than that, such that you need to go with a paid account, you’ll still very reasonable prices.

They are reliable

Just as importantly, though, these companies are reliable. There’s no danger of being unable to retrieve your data because of crashes or corruption, as can happen with other backup solutions. Reputable online storage solutions offer online backup services with redundancy, which means that they back up your data to more than one server. Even if one of their servers crash or have difficulty such that your data is corrupted and not retrievable, you can still get it from the service because they’ve backed it up on more than one server in different locations.

They generally provide automatic backups

Not every service provides automatic backups, but most do. That means you’re never in danger of having to try to restore data with woefully out of date backup files. The data on the server is as fresh as your last backup, whether it’s a minute old (with SQL backups, for example) or a day old. Just set your backup frequency by logging into your account.

They get glowing reviews, no matter where you look

It’s easy to find positive testimonials for online storage solutions on a particular service’s site, but if you do a thorough search on forums and other places where opinions are likely to be absolutely unbiased, AND a particular service gets glowing reviews from customers even there, you know you’ve got a good company that you can trust.
